Tips and Tricks for Saving on Auto Insurance

Finding the best auto insurance rates can sometimes be tricky. It is absolutely necessary to be insured on the roads, though. In fact, it is required, by Illinois state law to have coverage. Some find auto insurance to be extremely expensive but, there are ways to help make it more affordable. Here are some things to consider to find the ideal price of insurance.

Shop Around

Get quotes from multiple insurance companies, including different types of companies. Also, realize that the lowest number does not mean the cheapest.

Consider Insurance While Shopping for Cars

Some vehicles have lower reliability ratings and other factors that contribute to higher premiums. While researching cars it is important to compare potential premiums for each of your options to ensure you are getting the best deal.

Increase Deductible

By increasing your deductible, you can decrease your premium. Just be sure that the deductible is manageable for your budget and that you have enough money saved in case you need to file a claim.

Bundle Insurance

If the insurance agency that you choose offers bundling, take advantage of it. If not, try to stay with the same company for all of your insurance needs. This results in discounts in most cases.

Keep Good Credit

Having good credit helps lower insurance rates. Researchers have found a significant relationship between your credit score and amount of claims filed. Insurance companies tend to rely on this correlation to define your financial responsibility.

Low Mileage Discounts

Research mileage averages and see if you fall below that. Do not be afraid to ask about a low mileage discount. This discount could also apply to you if you are someone who carpools.

Group Insurance

Some people fall into the category of people who receive insurance from their employer or other groups they belong to. Some insurance providers offer discounts on auto insurance to people who fall into this category.

Other Discounts

Ask your agent if there are any additional discounts you are qualified for based on certain qualities such as how you drive, etc.

Purchase 10+ days before you actually need it

By purchasing coverage before you need to use it helps drive down premium costs.

Pay in Full Up Front

If possible pay in full, rather than setting up a payment plan. The amount you save annually will add up.

Get New Policy When You Move

Especially out of state! Some states have significantly higher insurance rates than others.

Older Cars

Buying a brand new car, just released is exciting, but if your priority is lower insurance premiums it is better to purchase models that are 5+ years old. They are considered more reliable.

VIN Number for Quotes

The purpose of this is to see if you are eligible for a discount if you have anti-theft devices.

Go Paperless

Some companies value using less paper and offer a small discount to those who opt out of using paper which is not hard to do in this age if technology. It is a small offering, but it adds up.

Insurance Vocabulary

Be sure to understand what the verbiage means so that you have a good idea of what you actually need covered and what questions you need to ask your agent.

Automatic Billing

This is another way to save over time, similar to going paperless.

Education

Some insurers offer discounts based off of the level of education you have. For example, some offer discounts for college graduates.

Teen Drivers

Teen drivers are known to drive up insurance costs, since they are more accident prone. But, if they are in a college that is 100+ miles away without a car some insurers allow them to be temporarily taken off of the plan. Additionally, most companies offer a "good student" discount implying that they correlate this test of intelligence with responsible driving habits. Proof of a safe driving class can also save some money on teen auto insurance.

Distracted Driving Is a Bigger Problem Than We Thought

The numbers do not lie: 37,150 people in the US died due to distracted driving in 2017. But, sadly that is not the worst part of the news. Researchers are finding that there is no single cause to preventing distracted driving.

This means that there is no direct route to a solution resulting in more and more deaths. Right now, the only thing proven to work is to spread awareness about distracted driving.

Another thing that experts are deciding to try is how to make smartphone connectivity to cars to take less attention. Almost every new car on the market makes it easy to connect your phone to your car.

You are able to stream music, map directions, and in some cases even order food, coffee, etc. This is taking many drivers' attention away from the road, in drivers aged 17 to 22 spend at least 12% of their time behind the wheel messing with their smart phones. Any percentage of time on your phone behind the wheel is too much time directed away from the road.

Both Apple and Android have their own extensions for cars. At one point Apple demanded more of customers' attention than the Android version when entering directions and getting from one place to another. But, when it came to texting Android was by far more of a distraction. However, both must make a change to reduce the threat of distracted driving.

With all of the new tech in cars, come inward facing cameras. Some people are not okay with that for privacy reasons which is understandable as to a degree, it is a basic right, in most peoples' eyes. However, these cameras may help develop self-driving cars with the data it collects. Additionally, it may be our answer to solving the distracted driving epidemic.

The data the cameras collected from crashes and everyday driving habits can be analyzed by experts to determine how to make the new technology in vehicles less cognitively demanding or even develop an algorithm to prevent inappropriate use while the vehicle is in motion.

But, how much privacy are consumers really willing to give up? How much of their data are companies entitled to? Right now, there is not much regulation, but it is probably coming soon as new cars will soon all have this technology.

There must be some type of compromise because when this data is used appropriately, breakthroughs can happen. For example, a lot of the tracking built into these cars can prevent crimes. A lot of the data provided can solve the mystery of crashes, including distracted driving crashes and provoke ideas on how to prevent them. The results can save money on auto insurance, medical bills, and most importantly lives which are priceless.

However, it is ultimately up to drivers to stop practicing distracted driving habits. Remember, distracted driving does not only come from cell phone and car functions taking your eyes off of the road. It also includes eating, drinking, putting on makeup and more. It must be put to an end to reduce the number of accidents and casualties.

3 Tips to Prevent Road Collisions

Most road collisions can be attributed to human errors. Driving carefully and obeying all traffic rules do not guarantee your total safety on the road. This is because road collisions can be caused by other drivers and you might have no control over this. There are some precautions which drivers and their employer can take to reduce their odds of getting involved in road collisions and also minimize their risk of being injured in road collisions.

Be Vigilant

Distraction is one of the leading cause of road collision. Multitasking is a very bad idea while driving. If you have to do anything else, you should park the car. Phones, food, noisy passenger, and every other thing which are capable of taking your attention away from the road and reducing your reaction time should be cut out. You should always remember that the activities of other drivers on the road can affect your safety. Thus, it's important to keep an eye on unsafe drivers because their recklessness threatens everyone else using the road. It's also important to keep a safe distance from the car ahead of you. This will give you the chance to react in case the car ahead of you stops abruptly.

Proper Monitoring

Most drivers believe they can do whatever they like once they are on the road as their employers would not be aware of their acts. Some take undeserved breaks or even run personal errands, and they end up over speeding to cover for the lost time. The advent of technology has made it possible to monitor drivers while they are on the road. GPS tracking features can be enabled in the vehicles to know where and how fast the drivers are moving in real time. It's important to ensure that your drivers leave early for an appointment to reduce their likelihood of rushing while on the road. Also, they should be monitored to ensure that they don't exceed speed limits. Drivers who consume alcohol should not be allowed to drive. No matter how small the alcohol consumed it, it can still affect their driving. Lastly, drivers should be given enough time to sleep and rest. A tired driver is a dangerous driver. As an employer, you should remember that the activities of your drivers on the broad directly or indirectly affect your business.

Avoid accident-prone areas

Busy intersections and roads with several hairpin turns are more prone to road collisions. These areas should be avoided as much as possible. Finding other routes to ply when avoiding these areas can be pretty difficult. Currently, there are Route sellers that are capable of showing you the easiest ways to reach your stops while avoiding some accident-prone areas.

There is no perfect driver, but a driver who applies these tips can have a much safer experience on the road. Adopting some state-of-the-art technologies can reduce the risks posed by human errors while driving. Many companies provide the technologies which are capable of preventing or reducing the risks of road collisions.

Bad Odor in the Car

A lot of us face a problem of bad odor inside the car. Actually, extra odor inside the car is the reason to perform a complete inspection and find the reason. There is no universal solution to the problem. First, you need to find the source of it.

Source of the smell is bacteria, which can grow up in dirty places. In some cases, when you breathe same air your lunges can become seek and you will require visiting your doctor.

Bad odor can be dangerous for a driver because he cannot concentrate on the road. Most affordable way to eliminate it - is to spray the deodorants. That kind of deodorants cannot destroy the odor - they just mask it for several days.

Let us say the petrol smell means that most likely drainage line of petrol tank required cleaning. If you have engine oil odor than need to check engine gaskets and seals. Most dangerous is burning smell and need to check electric wire.

Other main sources are:

- air conditioner vents,

- drinks/food on the seats,

- shoe traces on the car floor carpet,

- old water can be the reason of odor inside the car, under the seats or floor gaps,

- plastic parts of the car interior can have a bad smell, and they require specific polishing substances,

- cigarette/tobacco smell is most common; it can stay inside fabric and under the roof upholstery and ashtray of course; most of the smoking drivers do not feel the smell inside his car,

- fish, onion, egg, and urine - those 4 will produce the worst ever smell once you forgot them to remove.

Many people use old simple methods, which are actually very useful to remove the:

- dry smell - mix baking soda in water, and then spray inside the car for 3-4 hours,

- wet smell - coffee beans inside the fabric bag; keep them inside at least 3 days,

- tobacco smell - keep the plate with a paper towel inside the car and feel the plate with vinegar; remove the plate after 4-5 hours, or vanilla extract - just apply several drops on the seats,

Most regular methods to keep car interior fresh are:

- regular general cleaning with a vacuum cleaner,

- scrub the car interior to release the dirt,

- do not forget food and drinks inside,

- regularly replace the cabin filter,

- the more fresh air inside the car,

- wipe the car dashboard,

- steam clean interior,

- ozone generators.

If you do not feel bad odor it does not mean that the air is fresh. Usually you feel comfortable with your body smell but in fact, it is changing every day and your car interior accumulates all those odors. The ones body smell depends on main 3 reasons:

- how often you use the shower,

- your physical activity,

- your food and drinks.

Many food ingredients from fast food restaurants can specify your body smell. Let us say alcohol, sunflower oil, spicy, potato fries, red meat - if you like them too much it means you will have special and usually negative smell within an hour's after having your launch.

That is why regular cleaning is a must procedure for your vehicle. In that cases, you can also use dry fogging - a special process when the hygienically approved substance will act as a fog inside the car and reach bacteria in all places even under the roof and eliminate them. As a result, the original factory smell will return to your car.
